Vocaloid # 1 to start of with

Vocaloid goes SMOOOCH

IN HONOR TO ALL VOCALOIDS I HAVE MADE A MONTH FOR YOU.

Right, Vocaloids. More specifically, The Character Vocal Series. Don’t mistake it for the original Vocaloid program -- that one has several vocaloids not considered part of the character series, such as Miriam and Sweet Ann. The Character Vocal Series started the craze with the release of Hatsune Miku, 01 as they’re numbered, whose name consists of kanji for First, Sound, and Future (初音ミク).The Character Vocal Series uses Vocaloid2 program as its basis, and is meant for songs that often qualify as J-pop -- the vocaloids can sing, somewhat, in English, but I won’t recommend it unless you’re really feeling like butchering the language up some more. The recent Megurine Luka accomplishes this a bit better than the previous ones, but there’s still boatloads room for improvement.
Miku’s voice was given to her by Saki Fujita, a Japanese seiyuu, though I doubt she has similarly endless vocal range as Miku happens to have, thanks to the computer generated sound bank. This rather highly pitched Vocaloid was the first of the character series, and is still the most popular one. Miku started the craze, and has released albums available on Amazon -- if you want to obtain these, look for Re:package and Re:MIKUS. Some popular songs by her include works of Ryo and others (such as Supercell). There’s a horde of fanart for her out there, most of it very impressive in their quality.

Vocaloids were helped along to publicity by Nico Nico Douga, the Japanese video site resembling Youtube. It’s still the place to look for Vocaloid videos, and most of the Youtube versions originate from there. After the popularity of Vocaloid character series became obvious, a manga about Hatsune Miku started in Jive, drawn by her original character designer Kei. A video by Ryo with Miku’s vocals and featuring her as the Black Rock Shooter (drawn by Huke) received quite the attention by the fan population, and has lead to the release of a promo video for BRS anime, and an awesome 1/8 figure of BRS in all her glory.
